Echinacea, native to the U.S. The leaf and root are mildly antibacterial, antiviral, and used for wound healing. German research has confirmed, in numerous clinical studies, the usefulness of Echinacea purpurea in strengthening the body’s immune system as well as prevention and natural treatment of colds and flu.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus). The polysaccharides in astragalus are thought to intensify phagocytosis, meaning that it helps white blood cells to destroy bacteria, stimulate pituitary-adrenal activity, and stimulate production of interferon. Collectively, these properties are thought to provide an immune-enhancing action to astragalus. Laboratory studies have shown that Maitake extract can inhibit the growth of tumors and stimulate the immune system of cancerous mice. Human clinical studies of patients with breast and colorectal cancers are under way in the United States (Christopher Hobbs, L.Ac, A.H.G.)
